Leopard and Yahoo! Widgets 4

If you think we’re talking about jungle cats, you can stop reading now.

For the rest of you, I don’t need to tell you that today is the day Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) is getting released. I also probably don’t need to tell you that Leopard doesn’t play so nicely with the current version of Yahoo! Widgets. Rest assured, we have a fix coming. In the meantime, we ask patience of our Mac faithful. We promise, it’ll be worth the wait. ;-)

Looking forward to the update….as you state, it ain’t working at all in Leopard.

Ron - October 29th, 2007 at 3:59 pm

I love day planner and can’t do without it. I took Leopard off until Yahoo Widgets becomes compatible with Leopard.

Shawn - October 30th, 2007 at 12:39 pm

Day planner ? Hmmm, don’t know about that widget. For me, Yahoo Mail and Weather on my desktop has become invaluable.

sequethin - October 30th, 2007 at 2:14 pm

Ahhhh I was hoping to find a fix. But a promise is a promise… let us hope the promise is kept!

Mike - October 30th, 2007 at 2:35 pm

Any idea when the update will be available

Steve - October 31st, 2007 at 9:13 am

Could you give us an ETA?

Kim - October 31st, 2007 at 11:15 am

Oh please PLEASE hurry! Can’t live without the widgets. I too live and plan by my Yahoo Weather and Yahoo Mail widgets. No other programs come close to Yahoo. Can’t wait for the fix…

dan - October 31st, 2007 at 11:38 am

I am with Kim. I live by my widgets. Please find a fix fast. Love em too much

Peter - October 31st, 2007 at 2:22 pm

Will you notify users when Leopard compatible version will be available?

Raul - November 1st, 2007 at 5:42 am

I agree, need my widgets working in os x 10.5, I hope the guys release a fix as soon as possible.

sorry for my english

Chris - November 1st, 2007 at 2:04 pm

I needs my desktop trash back. LOL Thanks for working on the update. How will you get the word out? Will it auto-update?

Bill - November 2nd, 2007 at 6:57 am

I miss iTunes Radio Lover which pulls album artwork while playing music from the radio [RadioParadise dot com]…wish apple would make it easier to use dashboard widgets on your desktop. I think they’re kind of missing the point with the whole dashboard thing…

mike - November 3rd, 2007 at 6:30 am

We need the update urgently ;-) . We currently use Yahoo Widgets for our client time reporting tool. Unfortunately it doesn’t work at the moment.

defroster - November 4th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

Please tell us when we can expect an update for LEOPARD. thanks

Russ P. - November 5th, 2007 at 10:24 am

Clipdrop. Need it, need it BAD

widgetless - November 5th, 2007 at 8:25 pm

Any progress? Will it be a day or a week?

Hoops - November 5th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

Yahoo Widget Engine 3.1.5 will work with Leopard. Of course, newer widgets that leverage the new features in YWE 4.x won’t work, but I haven’t found that to be a problem with my Widgets of choice (Analog Clock, SystemBlox, Mini iTunesRemote and Yahoo! Weather).

YWE 3.1.5 can be downloaded here:

http://yahoo-widget-engine.en.softonic.com/mac/download

Scott S. - November 8th, 2007 at 12:17 pm

Any updates for us? We are waiting patently.

ssl - November 8th, 2007 at 12:48 pm

still nothing? I think if Konfabulator was still in the hands of the original creator, this would have been solved long ago… probably before 10.5 was publicly released. why does Y buy these companies only to neglect the product?

Ed - November 8th, 2007 at 12:59 pm

The update will come in the form of our new release, fwiw.

I take exception to the remark about neglecting the product. We have just in fact reworked its innards entirely so we have a solid foundation from which to build new features on.

The timing of Leopard vs. our getting our new release out is what has prevented us from doing yet another point release just to fix the Leopard issue. We simply don’t have the bandwidth to do both right now.

Please be patient, a fix is definitely on the way. I can’t say exactly when, but it should be measured in weeks, not months.

Raul - November 10th, 2007 at 4:39 am

Thanks Hoops, the YWE 3.1.5 seem work fine

yossariant - November 10th, 2007 at 11:31 pm

Woohoo! 3.1.5 works here too. Good call Hoops.

Thea Hardy - November 11th, 2007 at 12:22 am

Glad 3.1.5 worked for some of you. It doesn’t work at all for me. Not with anything - just won’t start up. Patience will be difficult - the real loss is I will probably try to find other widget things to do the same job. It’s the same for some other apps I use, like Unsanity’s stuff, that are not yet compatible. I am so used to them I am seeking replacements. If the replacements work, then I may not return to the old ones. I know that’s hard on software designers - I do custom software as part of my worklife. But it’s just the realities. I don’t think the product has been neglected - realities of the marketplace are that Mac doesn’t have the same slice of the pie. There’s where part of the bandwidth problem comes in. We chose Macs mostly because we know they are best. I guess this is part of the price we pay.

defroster - November 12th, 2007 at 7:35 pm

I just noticed that the link further up on the page now points to version 4 instead of 3.1.4, so that might be why it still doesn’t work for you Thea Hardy.

I have searched everywhere to find a new link, but no luck. Can somebody provide a new link or upload their version of 3.1.5 somewhere so we can download it? THANKS

kadir - November 13th, 2007 at 9:26 am

I always wanted to run the same 2 widgets at the same time on Yahoo Widgets. For example two yahoo weather widgets at the same time. Will it be possible soon? It would be great if they let duplicate the same widget more than once

Chet - November 16th, 2007 at 11:43 am

New Yahoo widgets website is very pretty and I had no trouble navigating but the results are still the same. Yahoo widgets engine does not work on Leopard.

Motti - November 17th, 2007 at 1:20 am

3.1.5 will not work on leo :(
i load the new version.

Gary - November 18th, 2007 at 7:28 am

Yahoo seems to be focusing more of its programmers on ways to sneak their browser toolbar on the PC then how to fix a few lines of display code for OSX Widgets.

jazze - November 18th, 2007 at 7:35 am

For those of you who use Yahoo Widgets because the widgets remain on the desktop, consider checking out Amnesty. They offer a 30-day trial, which will hopefully expire after Yahoo Widgets is released.

http://www.amnestywidgets.com/WidgetBrowser.html

RawheaD - November 19th, 2007 at 9:16 am

I don’t get the new site at all. Where’s the link to the actual engine itself? And what happened to the forums?

Kim - November 19th, 2007 at 1:57 pm

I have to admit…I am getting pretty angry and I totally agree with RawheaD. I mean seriously. This is supposed to be “what they do”. What a disappointment. I’ve already switched my homepage from Yahoo, downloaded the Amnesty Widgets and I’m looking to open another mail account through another provider so I can get rid of Yahoo altogether. If this happened with the widgets, is my Yahoo mail account next? It’s bad enough that the “classic view” is the only one you can access with a Mac, I’m not risking all of a sudden not being able to access my mail at all. Yahoo had a great thing going, it’s a shame they couldn’t keep it.

Jonathan - November 19th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

Just to clear a few things up. We’ve been working on rebuilding the site from the ground up for the last 8 months. The people working on that are different people from those who are working on the next (Leopard-compatible) version of the Widget engine.

@RawheaD:
- The Forums are still there (you can find them through the “Create Widgets” menu in the top nav bar).
- The engine comes down, only if you need it, with any given Widget. But, there’s also a “Starter Pack” available at http://widgets.yahoo.com/download/. We realize that it’s not particularly discoverable as is, and will be fixing that.

During the same time, we’ve been working on the next version of the Widget engine, with some seriously improved functionality (especially for developers), in parallel. As Ed said above, we made a conscious decision to not support Leopard for a couple weeks. The choice was either postpone our next release and the new features we’ve been working on for more than 6 months in order to ship a version of Yahoo! Widgets 4 that works on Leopard, *or* proceed with our plan to release Yahoo! Widgets 4.5 including new features *and* Leopard support very shortly.

Yes, we don’t have enough resources to do both these things in parallel. But, that definitely doesn’t mean we’re not cranking hard to improve your Yahoo! Widgets experience. We appreciate your passion for our product and sincerely apologize for what will be a temporary inconvenience. We hope you will like what we’ve got in store for you very shortly.

Dave - November 19th, 2007 at 6:03 pm

The biggest problem is the vagueness. If people knew that a scheduled release of 4.5 was scheduled for mid december then it would be a different story but saying its coming soon is too vague.

If you are serving a community like this one how do new features better serve it than actually having something to use?

Think of a bike with no chain… it is a bit of a hard sell to say you need to wait until I come out with this great new chain because it is lighter weight and is better.

The fact remains I have no chain and will go to the next guy who will provide me with a chain. Perhaps not the best chain but a chain none-the-less.

Ed - November 19th, 2007 at 7:14 pm

Sorry, we can’t be very specific because if something goes awry and we don’t make whatever date we said, we could be held accountable. Rest assured though that the time remaining is in weeks, not months. But I already said that.

Mel - November 19th, 2007 at 11:15 pm

Hope it’s soon

Amit - November 21st, 2007 at 1:24 am

Hi can u plz do it a bit faster our whole work is dependent on the fix….

defroster - November 21st, 2007 at 1:23 pm

I think the creators of this software are getting a bit too much crap from people. They are working on it as soon as they can and we should understand that. We should also be thankful that this program exists and that it’s free. Keep up the good work! I am looking forward to the new version. Best regards, David

luckyspin - November 22nd, 2007 at 7:55 pm

For those looking for a link to 3.1.5, try this one:

http://mac.rbytes.net/cat/mac/utilities/yahoo-widget-engine/#

selonscience - November 23rd, 2007 at 3:32 am

http://yahoo-widget-engine.rbytes.de/

here you can get the 3.1.5 until the new is out. with me my weather and postit widgets work.

Robert - November 24th, 2007 at 4:34 am

Yahoo is a major disappointment. Every other major non-MS player is coding to run multi-platform except Yahoo, and I’m not just talking about YWE. But YWE is a case where Yahoo hijacked a nice app that used to support us. That gripes me. I am closing my Yahoo Plus account and migrating mail, etc. to Google too.

MrSpokk - November 25th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

Egads! Talk about a bunch of whiners! Especially Kim. Maybe we should call a national emergency and get the US government involved! Is “free” too high a price? Have some patience.

Ori - November 26th, 2007 at 12:12 am

PEOPLE! I too have been in dire need of running duplicate widgets. I have a dual screen setup at home. One screen in the Entertainment room the other in my room and I have been looking everywhere for a way to have my weather widget display on both screens. But I can not find it. Luckily I’m a smart man. Read the next comment for the answer. Yes I figured it out.

Ori - November 26th, 2007 at 12:41 am

Go to the folder that you saved your Widgets. (usually its in My DocumentsMy Widgets in this folder find the Widget you wish to duplicate and copy and paste it (in the same folder). Rename the copy to whatever you please. Now open the copy and Voila, Duplicate Widgets.

snorklewacker - November 26th, 2007 at 8:01 am

Guys,

Wanted to add some kudos for all the hard work you’re doing: having read through the thread, it sounds like you had a hard decision to make, you made the choice you felt was best for the program, and I’m sorry you’re taking flak for it.

One request that I think would make people happier: please link to this thread, or put a note/link in the system requirements list, or do SOMETHING obvious on the download page to make it clear that Leopard is nonfunctional. Best would be a link that says “Running Leopard? Find out about Leopard compatibility HERE” with a link to a nicely worded page with some version of Jonathan’s summary above, but even a “LEOPARD WILL BE WORKING SOON” would do the trick.

It’s annoying for us regular users to have to keep coming back here to find out if the update is out, and I’m concerned you’re also losing new customers who download the engine on their machines and then discover it doesn’t work. A little transparency (just like you’ve been so willing to do on this thread!) goes a long way towards customer happiness. :)

Keep up the good work; I can’t wait for v4.5!

Turph - November 26th, 2007 at 8:07 am

Just amazes me that in this day in age of software development people still bitch and moan that their free applications are not ready immediately.

What is better?
- Having your widgets right away with tons of bugs?
- Waiting a month to get a solid code base?

Be realistic. Yahoo does not get an advanced copy of Leopard so they can build to it. How can they have widgets ready for you the day of an OS launch? Lighten up.

You want your widgets faster? Send Yahoo a resume. I am sure they will appreciate all the help they can get.

hal - November 26th, 2007 at 8:36 pm

Um, lame, with an ADC membership, any company could’ve gotten builds of Leopard several months before it came out in October and tested their product against it and had a Leopard ready version available. But no…

dramatools - November 26th, 2007 at 10:53 pm

Leopard had been in the works for some two years. You would think Yahoo! the multibillion dollar company it is, could spring for ADC Premier memberships for Ed and Arlo so they could get seeding releases of Mac OS. Not having a Leopard-compatible YWE in the works during Leopard’s seeding cycle is as big a slap in the face to us as Apple’s Konfabulator ripoff called ‘Dashboard’ was to Pixoria. And, quite honestly, Dashboard sucks. I don’t want to press F12 to see my widgets– I want them keeping my wallpaper company until I nudge a window out of the way to see them.

The Y! Widgets website makeover doesn’t help things either. Aside from this blog entry, there’s no mention of Leopard compatibility (or lack thereof). Meanwhile, it’s annoying trying to download the product through that ajaxy “Starter Kit” link. On first attempt, Adblock Plus borked it. The second attempt with ABP disabled silently installed the same old broken 4.0.5 release I had previously chucked. I couldn’t determine which release I was downloading, nor did I end up with a nice DMG archive for future installs. I don’t want a silent install sneaking junk onto my Mac– That’s the reason I stopped using Windows. I want Firefox to tell me it’s downloading a file and I want to see an archive in my downloads folder.

It’s not a matter of a free application– it’s about loyalty. Yahoo Widgets brings users into the Yahoo! Network. Once there, users have access to paid and advertising supported services. Dissuade those customers, and they’ll migrate to Google or MSN. Pixoria was first on the scene with widgets, but more than a handful of missteps like these will leave Yahoo! in the dust kicked up by Apple, Microsoft and Google.

Suzanne - November 27th, 2007 at 7:51 am

Well, as I paid for my software, I guess I have leave to complain? ;)

It’s been a month, and still no note on the front page (and now the whole application has vanished, only its widgets are showing), no official mention on the download page (which can be found only through the blog?) that it doesn’t work with Leopard…OH, how exciting, now I have to accept something through an interface without being able to look at it or even know what it is?!

This is just not reasonable.

Russ - November 27th, 2007 at 5:15 pm

Version 3.1.5 is working well on my Leopard system. You can find it here,
http://www.archive.org/web/web.php
with some searching, or go to Hoops post of Nov 5th for another download site.

If you’re unhappy about waiting for this most excellent and FREE software to be updated, I understand Yahoo is offering a double-your-money back guarantee to dissatisfied customers. :o )

TACH - November 28th, 2007 at 7:52 am

Any updates? ETAs? Workarounds? Anything?

Steve - November 28th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

I’ll take the money back guarantee on software that doesn’t work.

Where do I apply?

steve

Scott - November 29th, 2007 at 12:01 am

Just email the CEO of yahoo and he’ll personally mail you a cheque for $0.00

Turph - November 29th, 2007 at 8:59 am

Hal, Yeah maybe Yahoo “could have, should have” been testing their stuff to Leopard builds all along. We know they didn’t. Even Adobe did not make any guarantees about their Creative Suite working either - they have a few issues.

Agree there is no excuse for this sealed lip attitude & culture from Yahoo. If they were honest and sincere about supporting our platform we would get a target date. They do not do that and probably never will.

It is sad to say, but I would be happy just getting a Notify Me When It Is Done option….. How is that for lowered expectations?

tastelessfruit - November 29th, 2007 at 11:55 am

TO KADIR: dated11-13-07

it has always been possible to run more than one copy of the same widget.
download as many as you want (or just duplicate the one you have) and give each one a different name i.e.
Weather
WeatherSF
WeatherNYC
WeatherLA
etc…………………

tastelessfruit - November 29th, 2007 at 12:13 pm

3.1.5
i just tried this with leo and NONE of my preferred widgets would function.
weather/stockpicker/etc

Ed - November 29th, 2007 at 12:19 pm

We’ve just pushed out 4.5, which now supports Leopard. Get it at http://widgets.yahoo.com/upgrade/

John - November 29th, 2007 at 12:53 pm

Thanks a lot, guys! Your widgets are the best!

Yahoo! Widgets - Blog - November 29th, 2007 at 4:44 pm

[…] First of all, a hearty thank you to all our friends running Leopard for your patience over the last few weeks. We’re very happy to announce the latest version of Yahoo! Widgets has arrived, and we hope you agree it was worth the wait. It’s officially called Yahoo! Widgets 4.5, and there are a lot of major changes under the hood. […]

Mark - December 1st, 2007 at 5:41 pm

So how do I keep my widgets on every desktop if I’m using spaces? I have set my preferences to use Yahoo Widgets in every space but they only work in space 1.
Any ideas?

Cheers

Russ - December 2nd, 2007 at 8:43 am

Thanks Yahoo Dudes! You ROCK!!

Dave - December 2nd, 2007 at 4:57 pm

Great response to the issue. Thanks for remembering us OS X users.

Kudos to you!

tinman - December 2nd, 2007 at 11:38 pm

Thanks for the Widgets 4.5. The day planner is still not working under leopard though (can not get information for ical) ..

maxplanar - February 4th, 2008 at 9:52 am

Any updates expected for the Day Planner widget? This is the one thing I used YW for and that’s been broken for months now. I can’t find another widget to replace it that works either?

maxplanar - February 4th, 2008 at 9:53 am

(Above comment refers to using Day Planner widget under Leopard).

John - March 14th, 2008 at 11:29 am

Just wondering about an update for the day Planner widget, its still not working1

maxplanar - April 3rd, 2008 at 10:03 am

Tick, tock, tick, tock….we’re still waiting. Patiently. But less so. PLEASE fix this, it’s turning into a PR disaster for you.

maxplanar - April 7th, 2008 at 11:53 pm

Any news of a Leopard compatible version of YWE?

sequethin - April 28th, 2008 at 8:57 am

The only reason I downloaded yahoo widgets was for the day planner. And not only does it not work - there is no hope in sight! Not a blog entry… nothing. Basically “we don’t care about you. you get what you pay for” is how it feels.

maxplanar - May 30th, 2008 at 11:35 am

10.5.3 has taken the wrecking ball to what was already a crumbling edifice of YWE since 10.5. It’s coming apart at the seams. Please, someone - Arolo Rose, or someone else, write a competitor to this software. It’s a shame what’s happened to it since Yahoo took over and ruined the party. My sympathies go out to the YWE team - and I’d love you all to leave and restart the project. Your product is/was great, your bosses suck.

maxplanar - June 8th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

tick tock tick tock…..(twiddles thumbz)
