It's Here!

Yes! Yahoo Widgets 4 is now available for download. This version has a lot of cool new features for users as well as developers of Widgets.

For those that think we’ve been sitting around drinking tequila and not really focusing on Konfabulator/Yahoo Widgets, today’s the day we show you what we’ve really been up to for these past months. Well, we’ve been drinking some tequila too, but let’s stay focused, shall we? What?!

Note, by the way, that our new release is called simply Yahoo! Widgets. No more ‘Engine’. It was too much of a pain to say, quite frankly. Not to mention users don’t care about engines, they care about Widgets. Developers might care about the engine, which is why as of this release we are once again calling the core engine Konfabulator! Why not? Everyone still calls it that both inside and outside of Yahoo!, anyway.

And now, without any further ado, let’s get into all the awesomeness we’ve added in this release.

Widget Dock

First and foremost is the shiny new Widget Dock. Finally there’s a way to manage your Widgets in a neatly organized fashion. This was always an area we knew we needed to work on, and in this release we were able to spend the time and get a really polished UI in place for it (and make it dock to any corner or edge of multiple monitors). Does it do everything we wanted it to? No, but it’s pretty darned close. It’ll be changed and enhanced as we move forward and get feedback from you, the home viewer. Use that ‘Provide Feedback…’ link - we really do listen.

Not only can you manage your Widgets with the Dock, but Widgets can now show you what we call ‘vitality’, i.e. live info. Basically, it’s a mini Widget. So the Weather Widget can show the temperature, etc. in a smaller, more organized form factor. As more Widgets get updated to work on Version 4, you’ll see more and more information in the Dock.

Updates and Widget Discovery

We now support automatic Widget updates. When an update is available for one of your running Widgets, you’ll get an indicator in the Dock. Click it and you’ll be running the update in seconds. While this magic only exists for our Yahoo!-built Widgets right now, we plan to make similar functionality available to third-party Widget authors as well in the near future.

If you ever get bored with the Widgets you have on your machine, there’s now a much easier way to get new ones - the new Gallery Widget. With it, you can browse the Widget Gallery’s 4300+ Widgets and get new ones with one click, all without ever opening a web browser. The Gallery Widget will ship with every copy of Yahoo! Widgets 4. You’re welcome.

But for people who can’t get enough web page excitement, you can still visit our Widget Gallery page. We’ve enhanced it for this release to allow one button install and run of Widgets that catch your fancy. If you don’t like a Widget, you can right-click it in the dock and forever vanquish it from your machine. Oh, the power! Use it for good.

Improved User Experience

We’ve simplified a lot of our interface features based on user feedback and testing. For example, we used to have a series of window levels a Widget could use, but each Window level tied on extra features. In this version, we’ve broken them out into separate preferences. So now the level of the window is separate from whether the Widget is clickable, for example. It should make a lot more sense now.

To further simplify things, there’s also a new “hidden” state for Widgets. The hidden state allows the user to run a Widget without displaying its full interface on the screen. Widgets running in “hidden” mode continue to display live updates (or vitality) in their tile in the Dock. To display the full Widget again, just select the “show” control on the miniaturized Dock tile or click the tile. This feature replaces the old ‘Heads-Up Display Only’ window level for Widgets. Just hide a Widget and if you want to see it, bring up the Heads-Up Display mode or click its tile in the dock. It’s much more intuitive and straightforward now.

Improved Performance

Even with all those features packed in there, we’ve managed to reduce our memory consumption by about 40%. This number is based on what Task Manager shows as ‘VM Size’ or the Mac (under top) shows as ‘RPRIV’. This is real, allocated memory by a process. It’s the one true number an application can really make a dent in. I’ll post a tome on how measuring memory usage is not as simple as adding up ‘Mem Usage’ in Task Manager some other time.

A Powerful Flickr Widget

Another new Widget is our Flickr Widget. Not only will it stream your favorite Flickr photos right to your desktop, the Flickr Widget also has powerful drag-and-drop upload which allows you to do highly customized batch uploads without having to open a browser. You will love browsing pictures in this Widget. I can personally attest that the manner in which it allows you to browse the Interestingness category is just plain awesome. This is by far the most full-featured Widget we’ve ever created. The Flickr Widget is just one example of what this latest Konfabulator engine can do, as well as the direction we are heading.

Developer Features

For the Widget developers out there, we’ve added cool features like SQLite support, canvas support (the old puzzle blog post was done via the canvas feature), submenus, rotation of pretty much anything, and DOM-like traversal. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. If you want the full list of new features, check out our release notes. A lot of what we’ve added is based on feedback from the current developer base. So by all means, keep posting in the forums.

And how will you get this new information into your brains? Well, along with the usual reference guide in PDF, we now have online docs for the first time in our history. It’s our first cut at it, and we will be adding certain features that you might have come to love about other online docs solutions, but at least you now have it on the web as well as in PDF. Choice is good.

One big question that developers have had for some time has been “How do I deliver my Widget and have the engine come along automatically?” Well, with our new Widget Gallery web site, you can submit your Widget, and part of the magic we have in place is to automatically deliver the engine (or upgrade it as necessary) when the user downloads your Widget. No more two-step install. Push one button, and it all happens automatically. This is a huge deal for publishing your Widgets. Just link to your Widget’s detail page in our Gallery and you’re good to go.

As mentioned above, we will soon be allowing developers to set their Widgets up for auto-update as the Yahoo!-built Widgets are. And look for a lot more to happen in the developer space over the coming months.

What are you waiting for?

As you can see there’s a lot to take in with this release of Yahoo! Widgets. The best way to find out what’s new and exciting is to just go and download it. So, have at it!

what heck!! i’m unable to install it. i see ’send report to microsoft’ as soon as i select next after selecting a installation directory. please provide a link for me to download widget 3.0.

Try restarting. We’ve seen at least one other report of that and restarting seemed to fix that. If it does not, please contact our support team ASAP. We’ll look deeper in the meantime.

Hi there, how about a proper new Yahoo Jukebox widget that takes advantage of the dock?

I am using the “Yahoo Music Engine Remote” widget and it could be doing a lot more. How about some album art in the dock, maybe a simple pause/play button?

Ant Fer - March 22nd, 2007 at 10:19 am

Well, we can no longer left click the systray icon. You have to be careful not to right click the start bar or else windows options pops up..

Thilak - March 22nd, 2007 at 10:27 am

Sameer: You can try search for the older version here. I installed it on my laptop without a glitch. Infact, I was so happy with its usability that I decided to keep it (Usually, I uninstall the software after trying it out).

Good Job, Yahoooo!!

WickedP - March 22nd, 2007 at 10:40 am

Ummm…the “Use IE proxy” isn’t working…and what’s with entering the IP address for the manual proxy setting…which didn’t work either…

IndianMonk - March 22nd, 2007 at 10:44 am

Very cool. Great job, guys! I was wondering if Yahoo abandoned widgets. Apparently not.
So far so good. It really seems to use a lot less memory than v 3.0. I was trying out the Flickr widget and the photos somehow are not that sharp; I think there is a resizing problem.

Jim - March 22nd, 2007 at 11:08 am

This is great! I really like the new dock feature. Is there not a way to make the widgets appear ONLY in the heads up display as in the previous versions though?

Abe - March 22nd, 2007 at 11:32 am

I use Yahoo widgets because I don’t want to use a widget bar. So why you put it? I love the heads up display ONLY.

Spycam - March 22nd, 2007 at 3:12 pm

Thanks for this release. Yahoo! Widgets is definitely the best.

It’s an installer, now, eh? So I can have a “Yahoo! Installer” plugin? With no mention of it being installed or what it does? Whee.

ahoving - March 22nd, 2007 at 6:50 pm

I can’t install, get error saying no .kon in bundle. My friend Todd says “I guess the Intel Mac doesn’t like the
flat-file.” So he gave me a “good old zip.widget format” and that worked. Does that tell you anything helpful?

Ed - March 22nd, 2007 at 6:51 pm

The installer plugin is used for the Gallery website, to help you get the one-click installation of Widgets. It also helps us tell the difference between Widgets you have and Widgets you don’t have to treat the buttons differently (Open Widget vs. Get Widget).

dave - March 22nd, 2007 at 7:19 pm

so my old widgets worked great, and had several on top of many of my windows to track batter, wifi, and other such things. now my tv tracker one doesn’t even work with the rest, i will see what happens after a restart, and maybe a bit more tinkering, but i would like to know what happened. Other than that i am quite impressed with the new set up and design.

camz - March 23rd, 2007 at 8:34 am

I am unable to disable the Hot Key. If you set it to none and then save it ignores the change and reverts back to the original setting. Given that it had a default of the “2″ key after an install, this was really annoying, as a developer though I use the function keys all the time during debugging, so there isn’t a convenient “unused” key to set it to. Please fix this, it’s a show-stopper for using the new widget engine.

Joseph - March 23rd, 2007 at 9:19 am

Wouldn’t it be more useful if only the widgets I had hidden showed in the dock? Why would I want them shown twice?

Oh my God — the dock can’t even launch multiple instances. What’s the use of it then?!

Ed - March 24th, 2007 at 12:40 am

Proxy problem is fixed, as reported on the forums earlier today. You might need to mess with prefs to get it to finally take, but it definitely is fixed.

Hot key problem is something I’ve fixed here, but not yet released.

helen - March 24th, 2007 at 8:58 pm

It’s NOT gone. Just hide your Widgets. Then press F8. Same thing.

i just noticed soemthing strange is happening. i was having some problems with my widget 4, so i un-installed it, but instead the program remained intact meaning i could run it use my widgets and all, but it disappeared from the add/remove (windows xp), it also did not show up on any other reg-cleaner type programs. and so i had to individually remove the files. and now the yahoo widget download site is actin up. i cant download. it just says ” file not found”. any one else notice this problem about downloading.

DT - March 25th, 2007 at 2:56 pm

I still have proxie probs and the support page wants a yahoo id which I can’t be buggered digging up.
Yahoo email should be enough!

Thanks to the proxie prob I can’t even access the ‘upgrade widgets’ util.

jason - March 25th, 2007 at 7:15 pm

So, let me get this straight. the dock can’t launch multiple instances of a widget? what’s the point then.

Derek Knight - March 25th, 2007 at 10:43 pm

I had some grief installing this. Norton threw out the exe as being a VirusBurst trojan. I had to turn off Norton then download and install.

Then when I finally got the engine installed, it trashed two of my widgets (replacing them with “1″ versions. So I had to go round and rename a few files.

Then, the dock, “what the?” I have a laptop with a small screen and there’s this dock floating on top of my widgets. The dock icons are relatively huge and don’t add anything - they’re all identical and quite ugly. Well I closed that pretty quickly, so now the functionality I have and want is pretty much what I already had with 3.x.

Finally, is it my imagination or do I now have to right-click the toolbar icon to bring up the menu, where I’m sure I used to left-click. I could be imagining that.

Sorry guys. You score pretty low for this release.

treunonove - March 26th, 2007 at 9:16 am

Hi and thanks for this very useful and cool upgrade.
A question: when I download Yahoo official widgets, they display their custom icon in the widget dock; but when I download other widgets than the official ones, the only icon I can see in the dock is the general grey “widget” icon, and not the different ones I see when I look at the gallery in the option “get more ones”.
Is there a way to assign their custom icon by right-clicking the Widget to get rid of that boring anonymous grey one?
Thanks from Italy :)

Josh - March 26th, 2007 at 10:33 am

For whatever reason when I set a widget to be on top of all windows it doesn’t listen, which kills the usefulness of this app. Anyone else experiencing this? I am having issues with the fuzzy clock 2 widget.

Peter The Apology Guy - March 26th, 2007 at 3:53 pm

My Norton Antivirus keeps telling me the exe file for yahoo widgets has the ViruBurst virus. So I won’t install. Anyone else have the same issue?

Ed - March 26th, 2007 at 3:56 pm

The Symantec issue has been resolved (I believe they are pushing new definitions which rectify this false positive).

The recent launches of Adobe Apollo and Yahoo Widgets 4, and Joyent’s SlingShot along with the upcoming Firefox 3 are signs that the offline availability of web applications (and the data they carry) is going to remain critical for near foreseeable future. .jon - March 27th, 2007 at 3:48 pm

Congratulations for the new release. Good ideas!

Though, I do have some problems as well.

Is it really clever to use

C:Documents and SettingsLocal SettingsApplication Data

these days ? Why not simply evaluate the %PROFILEDIR% or %USERHOME% ?

Many people have several partitions, these days and try to keep private/configuration data out of C:.

Also, I am not sure, what the current status is on XP. To me it seems, “C:Documents and SettingsLocal SettingsApplication Data” has been replaced by “C:Documents and SettingsApplication Data” these days.

May I kindly ask for an update, that fixes this on Windows ?

Second, I would be glad, if I could use the Widget Engine as Javascript Interpreter, including the special functions and filesystem access on all hosts it is available for via external scripts. That is, if I write a Javascript that represents a macro for a Javascript capable application I’d like to IPC with the Widget Engine and run parts of the script on that. I mainly need filesystem access on all three major operating systems for Desktop and Application macroing.

OneBigBall - April 5th, 2007 at 8:51 am

Issues:

1. When you play a game that temporarily changes the screen resolution during gameplay & back to normal when done, the widgets don’t return to their original position. Instead, they bunch up in the upper left hand quadrant of the screen.

2. You can’t disable the heads up display hotkey. It reverts back to “2″ if you set it to “none”.

3. There’s no option to check for new widgets using the browser first instead of the widget.

SotPlug - April 8th, 2007 at 12:53 am

The ‘on desktop’ window level really shouldn’t be removed in this version. Now Yahoo! Widget has no use for me anymore. This could potentially be the reason I’ll be giving up on Yahoo! Widget soon.

hi all!

i have a laptop that runs on dial-up (i know, painfully slow) that runs Yahoo Widgets 4. Because it’s so slow, I have to download all my widgets on our main, home computer and transfer it to removable storage. My dad conserves his space and doesn’t like things installed. So, the new ‘one-click’ download really isn’t helpful. Please, please make a back-route that was like the older Y!WE 3 Widget Gallery. I cannot download my widgets now unless I dial-up and for that reason I’d rather eat my screen. But, on the flipside, great new features. bye!

Folks,
I have a issue with the proxy setting. Version 3 worked fine. Version 4 doesn’t use the IE settings and now even the manual proxy settings don’t work. This sucks big time. I now can’t use widgets that access the internet.
Widgets 4 were downloaded from the yahoo site on 11th April. Initially they worked, but since I rebooted the system access to the internet via a proxy does NOT work.

Please FIX !!!!!!!!!!

Rook - April 20th, 2007 at 4:40 pm

How do I get yahoo widgets to only run on the Heads Up Display is there a way the widgets will not do me any good if I can’t put them on the heads up only mode. If anyone figures it out please let me know.

Motorcycle Guy - April 21st, 2007 at 7:45 pm

Dereth - April 26th, 2007 at 5:11 am

Why does the damn widget gallery still NOT provide most popular or most highly rated sorting?

It’s such a pain finding a good widget or what other have tried and proven.

This is so anal and one of the rare times I don’t like something from Yahoo.

Rajesh - May 3rd, 2007 at 1:43 pm

Dereth - May 6th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

Well… looks like I’m one of the victims of the proxy problems. I can’t connect as long as a proxy is needed. That means when I’m at work. Neither manual entry nor IE specific settings work.

Unable to find the mysterious aforementioned fix.

[…] Yahoo launched a new version of Yahoo Widgets (previously known as Konfabulator), a free application that displays small widgets on your desktop. Launched in 2002 for Mac, and then ported to Windows, Konfabulator was bought in 2005 by Yahoo. Google Desktop was launched in 2004 as a desktop search tool, but it started to include support for widgets in 2005. “Google Desktop is a new, easier way to get information – even without searching. You can think of it as a personal web assistant that learns about your habits and interests to identify and present web pages, news stories, and photos that it thinks you will be interested in,” said Marissa Mayer. I am also irritated that the Head up Display has been removed. Some widgets simple don’t deserve to sit on my desktop all the time but are still useful.

My solution: simply delete those widgets.

I suppose once you’re down to a few widgets the value of the Widget Engine itself becomes marginal.

Ed - May 29th, 2007 at 9:56 am

For the nth time: heads-up-display has NOT been removed. You merely hide your widgets using the Hide Widget menu item. Then they’ll only display in heads-up display.

I just wanted to say that you guys need to put that thing about the hiding the widget/heads up display into your documentation somewhere. We shouldn’t really have to search the web for blogs to figure out how to get our functionality back. Its not really an intuitive switch.

Are Yahoo widgets truly easier to work with than the others?

Blackfish95 - July 5th, 2007 at 12:01 pm

Hey, I’m back to Y! Widgets from Google desktop to try 4.0. So far so good. I like the look and feel of the dock, however it’d be nice to be able to move the mini widgets locations relative to each other. IE i might want the Time, Date, Battery, WiFi meter at the top, then whatever else below etc.

For widgets that don’t have a mini-dock version, I’d like the ability to not show their icon in the dock. IE CPUSpy… It’s good as it shows the CPU usage for each of my dual cores…but the mini-widget is a small icon of what the main widget looks like. Ie it’s just a place holder. I’d rather have a small working widget, or NOTHING there if possible ;)

Yahoo says Yahoo! Widget need 512 Ram. I think Yahoo! did not run this widget in 256 Ram machine. It works wonderful. My PC has 256 Ram and it works very good and did not slow down my PC yet. So forget about Ram requirment for Yahoo widget and install it today. May be you like Google desktop but that is a dump soft and slowed down your PC

Tim - July 21st, 2007 at 8:45 pm

@ED

The hiding of the widgets works great ’till you restart windows. When I rebooted, all the widgets showed up again on my desktop, not in heads up. Is this a bug?!?

Tim - July 24th, 2007 at 7:40 pm

Hasn’t happened again, so I don’t know if it’s an issue.

How do I get the Widget out of my computer? Thank You.

Excellent “product”, but (theres always one isn’t there) - I could be doing with a little more functioality with yon dock thing, ie hide a couple of widget icons (ie the stupid bland grey cogs where a dedicated icon doesn’t exist) - and I would also like to rearrange them in the order I like. On this note I’ve noticed they’re added alphabetically, but when I rename some of them, eg scrolling_toolbar or Yahoo! Weather, they appear in their original location. I would also like to limit the number that appear in the dock to 7 or 8, whilst having perhaps 10 running.

Let me know when you sort this please!

I’m having a problem with the dock because I have the “always on top” option unchecked but it always is on top. I can always see a line on the right side of my screen and for example when i’m using my browser sometimes the dock pops up when I put the mouse cursor near the dock’s line. It`s really annoying.

me - September 20th, 2007 at 11:43 am

Just want add to the previous post that I have the “hide dock” option checked.

Paul - September 25th, 2007 at 3:38 pm

I want you all to develop the HTML side to these widgets so I can put them on my blog.

Libtech - October 5th, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Back to the “Hide Widgets” menu item. Where is it? I see hide dock but I can not for the life of me find “Hide Widgets” Any help would be appreciated….

Bolle - October 17th, 2007 at 12:54 am

Hi, installed yahoo widgets engine yesterday and closed the dock because it was to be seen and flickering while using a 3d poker game which is not fullscreen. Now the dock is gone!? When I click on the widgets start menu entry nothing happens. The widgets are still there but the dock is gone. I cant open new widgets or do anything now. How do I get the dock back??? Restart won’t help. Thanks.

crmmcc - November 16th, 2007 at 12:04 pm

I installed the latest version yesterday 11/15/07 and the items requiring Internet connections fail. (Weather). The proxy settings are not totally configurable as you can’t enter user ID information to pass credentials as our proxies need.
Has anyone been able to get past this? Using the IE settings does not work.

Yahoo! Widgets - Blog - December 1st, 2007 at 1:07 pm

[…] Making our platform as powerful and secure as possible. We firmly believe that the best desktop Widgets combine the power of the desktop – including things like access to local resources, more powerful processing, and offline access – with the fun of the Internet in ways that are unique from what can be done in a browser. That’s why we added features like canvas and a SQLite database in Yahoo! Widgets 4 and why we added the new security model, video support, and full DOM in 4.5. […]

fanatik92 - December 29th, 2007 at 2:34 am

yo there,
same prob with treunonove - March 26th, 2007 at 9:16 am.
on the dock, instead of showing the custom icon, it shows grey gears icon with ‘widget’.
this happens to all non official widgets plus ‘yahoo! search’ widget even after upgrading to 4.5.1
really frustrated coz my friends’ dock show the same widget icons correctly.
so how to solve this? peace!!!
